i am working as a staff nurse in operation theater of jipmer hospital, a central government institution. if any miscellaneous items, for eg. torch gets missed during my duty, what is the action to be taken by incharges of the operation theater. As there is no written protocol in the institution for these kind of problems, does the incharge has the right to ask whomever on duty( staff nurse alone) to buy and replace the item without making any official enquiry.staff nurse is not the only person who is present in that place , there are doctors , attendants, assistants, safaiwalas.just because nurses take over , are they liable in these kind of problems. suggest a solution in the interest of both incharge and staffs.

Since you have mentioned that there is no written instructions, escalate this issue to the appropriate authority. Further, stock register while handing/taking over may also be suggested. In the said instructions, add a clause that if anyone is suspected of theft, they are liable to be searched by the appropriate security and disciplinary action be initiated against the defaulters.

As you nurses take the torches, so it is better if you return the same to the incharge within time to eradicate future problem like theft and suspecting each other and thus creating an unhealthy atmosphere in the institution. Such petty item should be taken care by you nurses.

here the question is who is supposed to maintain such items in the operation theater, certainly it is a case of theft, I would not put any allegation upon the nursing profession but the person who is incharge of all such items shall be responsible, however such in charge always has a right to prove his/her innocence.

In many organizations, such problems are addressed in a simple method. Administration will not supply any such miscellaneous petty movable items to the working staff. Instead, they pay a permanent allowance on annual basis to ensure that such items like stationery, torch, etc are purchased and kept under the personal custody of employees themselves. This method has been highly successful in public sector banks.
