dear sir,
my son's engagement was done 16 months before. During this period, on many occasion, we found that girl is not suitable for our home-in nature, in thoughts and in actions-reactions on different situation. In fact we fixed the marriage date also. But a couple of days back, she again raised some issue. This was limit for us. so we broke the relation. Now her parents are threatening us that they will send gundaas to our house, they go to media, they will give this in news paper to defame us.
in which law (criminal or family law) they can proceed for legal action. To broke the engagement is it a crime ? (2) against their threat, can we file a police complain ?
pl. guide me , what to do ?
thanks

They could frame some cases but that will not sustain.Breaking engagement per se is not a crime.

complaint can be filed against them for threatening.
there is no bar for any side to go for complaint or to media.
but i think that u should think twice upon the opinion of TOM.ADV. before coming into action.

Opinion of Santosh is right.
However, if on their instigation media tries to defame you, you can try both the party as well as the media for defamation in the court of law.

To break an engagement is not a crime. However, they may lodge false criminal case like illegal demand of dowry etc. So, you may inform to the police and other higher officials regrding their threats etc. In case of defaming you and your family by media or otherwise, you may lodge case against all the parties involved in such fefamation including media.
