Dear Mr. Chetan,

You have mentioned that your father-in-law got self acquired property. If a person is having self acquired property, then he can dispose off the same in the manner he may deem fit and proper during his life time. Therefore, your wife can not claim her share in her father's self acquired property. However, only in the cases when a person having self acquired property died intestate (without making any will) then upon such event the property is divided as per the relevant succession act wherein all the legal heirs can claim their respective shares.

Your father-in-law is the absolute owner of the property and so, is free to dispose it off as he pleases.
