I have been working with my company for a few years now. I recently passed my exams and gained certificates as a Second Officer. Currently I am sailing as a third officer. My company has asked me and some colleagues to deposit a certain sum as Security Deposit. Is it legal? It is a Malaysia based company.

if you want the job you better pay . company wants a guarantee that you wont leave them in high seas . hence asking you to give SD . read terms and conditions of your appointment letter carefully . does it mention of any SD to be paid by you

Go through the terms and conditions of employment, if security deposit is required, pay it.

It is obvious that the company would require the services of emplyee trained at their cost, therefore, security deposit is being asked to ensure your stay with them.
Nothing to worry, deposit the money and enjoy its fruits. You shall be benefitted, I am sure.

If it is a condition for employment, you may have to comply with it, in any case, it is just a deposit, which can be refunded on fulfilling the terms of employment
