Theft case on electricity.

Please let me know what we should have done on such issues. Actually senior engineers put charges on us that we tempered the meter as there are no proof on such things.
After removing the electric meter, they called us to come at laboratory and there, they told us that meter was tempered. As we don't know how it would happen as we didn't do anything because our meters are outside at our home.Nobody caught us while doing such a offensive activity. Please can anybody let me know what we can do because if you are right you want to fight back.

Initially you can plead with the authorities to assess the consumption on the basis of the points and compare with the meter reading to prove that there is no tampering. When they have detected this tampering? You can submit all your electricity consumption bills and ask for a comparison. Still if the Department bent upon taking action, you can contact a local lawyer giving full facts. Your plea that meters are outside, and your were not caught red-handed will not stand. The Department will have their own techniques to prove willful tampering if there is variation in the consumption and the pointed installed.

Now the police will register FIR and you have to take bail. Bail is possible only if you pay the penal amount.
This offence is compoundable on payment of 3 times of first penal amount. Otherwise case will proceed which is a sessions triable case.
