what is the maximum time in terms of years
one can report murder to police which has taken place 15 years back but came to know in this month vide letter .

letter author is acccused's brother.he is also victim's brother.
victim, accused, informer all are brothers.
letter says victim was given poison with liquor
motive of the murder was property. today victim's property is in possession of accused. author of the letter demanding share of that property.
victim's sons are living at their maternal house
witnesses are alive in the village
is this clear blackmailing?

The brother was silent as he was least bothered. Now he has written letter to you as the murderer has refused to give him property.
You go the police station and file FIR. Police will investigate. Now if you delay after receiving the letter, then your case becomes weak and suspicious.

i have to go to satara in person to lodge FIR
or can i lodge FIR in mumbai?
or should i send my letter requesting to lodge FIR by post to satara DSP?
and letter i received is xerox copy will it do?

there is no time limit for criminal complaint/FIR for murder case, in criminal case there is no suit.
for limitation you have to read section 468 of CR.PC

You approach the police. In the interest of justice, all will be accepted in the police station. In court, at the evidence stage, all this will be weighed. If you want justice for the the victim, lodge the FIR.
