In my opinion, there are many people who genuinely need legal assistance but are unable to pay fees, an advocate can give legal advice / assistence to at least some of such people approaching him / her either free or charging minimum fees. Even here the advocates are giving legal advices on the forum, they are not paid for that, this is just for the benefit of the general public.

In addition to the replies of other experts, I think the main social responsibility of the advocates is to maintain social and legal norms in the society by their own act and conduct as well as by their professional ethics viz. One advocate may advise his clients not to indulge in illegal means or one may refuse to contest/defend the case of known criminals or may harass such persons so that those may come to social life and social harmony may be created.
