Unfortunately in India the wives can initiate a whole lot of criminal cases on the basis of mere complaint only which at the initial stage does not require any foolproof evidence. So forget about making any payment and go fir mutual compromise and at the same time file a c suit for restitution of conjugal rights.

Now a days it has become a fashion of the fashion of the wives to file a criminal against the husband for silly reason. Issue notice to join you otherwise file a suit for RCR.

Mr anonymous, money earned and saved by your wife, she is exclusive owner of the same. The said money was trusted upon you.Your wife can demand and claim at any time.you are liable to give it without deducting any penny. If you denied, you will have to face criminal proceeding which is punishable u/s 420,406 I.P.C.You must return the money and try to solve the matter amicably. your honesty may impress her.

I totally and absolutely agree with Mr. n.K. Sarin. It is her money and it should be returned. Unfortunately and unknowingly it is being termed as "dowry" and that is why, your wife is saying that to recover that amount she would file a case of dowry. It is not dowry and it is "istri dhan" and she is entitled to get it back. If there is any loophole in my describing that amount as "istri dhan", then also she is entitled to that amount for the reason that you are a "trustee" as described by my ld. friend Sh.Sarin.

Return the money & get the property entirely in your name. If the property has already been registered in both names , return the money subject to her transferring her share in the property in your name.
About spending a fortune on her,it is best forgotten.
