I hope there are some bright sparks out there... Does anyone know how can someone in the UK transfer their ownership of property in India to joint names with his wife, without travelling to India? Can this all be done by post as it can in the UK?

Get a special power of attorney executed from U.K. in the name of someone whom you can trust. Tell him to Approach the local document writer where the property situate to prepare a sale deed showing the usual rate of valuation of the property. Tell your Attorney to sign it before the Registrar. After obtaining the registered deed approach the local revenue authorities. Get the revenue records mutated in the joint names of you and your wife and pay the revenue for the property showing both you and your wife as joint holders

Prepare a Gift Deed and send it to UK, where he will execute(sign) the said deed in favour of Donees and ask him to execute a special power of attorney also, appointing a trusted person who is resident of India. and the said signed Gift Deed and Special Power deed need to be notarized by UK Attorney.Send the signed Gift Deed along with Special Power to India. The signed Special Power of Attorney shall be revalidated here in India in concerned registrar’s office after the payment of requisite fee. The signed Gift Deed needs to be presented before Office of Registrar along with Special Power of Attorney for the registration process.

Many thanks to the bright sparks! It's much clearer now that someone with a power of attorney here can do all the necessary work, once that is granted from the UK.
Very much appreciated.
