Evalueserve conducted research on the top filers at the Indian Patent Office [IPO] for the last three years from January 2005 to December 2007. Based on their analysis reported in Patent User Information Group (PIUG), the following table shows the top 50 patent filers at the IPO during this period. Out of 87,245 patent applications published in this three year period, 28224 applications 32% were filed by the top 50 patent applicants, in which only four Indian applicants appear in the top list. They include the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ranbaxy Laboratories, Dr.Reddy’s Laboratories and the Indian Institute of Technology, where it merely contributes to 2.7% of total patent published. Evalueserve concludes that although patent filing trend at IPO have been increasing at remarkable rate, a sizable portion of this increase can be attributed to foreign companies and multinational corporations.
