Guideliness for retention of record

From where can i get guideliness prescribed by Punjab government and central government for retention/maintenance/preservation of government records (property) and the prescribed procedure followed to keep record in record rooms.
Is there any act also related to same?
Please elaborate.

Except for common type of records, every department of the Central or State Government has its own rules of preservation of records depending upon the permanent or temporary need of preservation. Better use RTI to ask for the information from the concerned department to ask for the periodicity of preservation of record to serve your specific need in a specific case.
