Limitation period for registration of documents

If a document or instrument whose registration is optional under the Registration Act, if it is presented after 4 months of its execution for presentation with the registration authorities, will it be considered as delay in presentment or not?

Does the 4 month time period is  only for compulsorily registrable documents ?
